Genital Warts Removal – Treatment Options for HPV Genital Warts

Genital Warts Removal
Genital warts are considered as one of the one of the most prevalent types of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). There are several options when it comes to genital warts removal and the range of choices include medical treatments, surgical and other invasive procedures and natural and other alternative treatments.

Genital warts are caused by several strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). It can affect the mucous membrane or the skin surrounding the infected genitalia. The typical symptom of the infection is the emergence of cauliflower-shaped and fleshy growths in the site of involvement.

Options for Genital Warts Removal

Genital warts can be eradicated using any of the treatment options that are currently available. Such modalities are classified under two major categories and these are physician-administered treatments options and patient-administered treatments. Men and women who have these abnormal growths and accompanied by itching, pain or burning sensation should immediately consult a doctor before they take any medication to treat their condition.

The medical condition is generally self-limiting in about 30 percent of all cases of infection. This means that genital warts will go away within a certain period of time without any medical intervention. Doctors may prescribe topical creams that can be safely administered by an individual who has genital warts. For the more severe types of the infection, the preferred modalities are the more aggressive ones and these include surgical incision, laser surgery and electrocautery.

Medications for Genital Warts Removal

There are several topical medications which you can use to get rid of genital warts. These medications  are home-based modalities that can help you control the spread of the disease by boosting the immune response of the body. It is important to note that patients are required to abstain from any form of sexual contact while the medication is on the site of infection. The reason for this is that such medications can potentially weaken and damage diaphragms and condoms.

Podophyllin – This medication for genital warts removal is a plant-based resin. It is commonly used by physicians as part of a regular treatment regimen for HPV genital warts. On the other hand, Podofilox, which is a similar medication for genital warts removal, is a home-based treatment which can be administered by the patient. These medications are contraindicated for pregnant women.
Trichloroacetic Acid – This HPV genital warts medication acts by “burning” the abnormal growths or bumps in the genitalia and anal area. This is strictly administered by doctors and should not be used as a home-based treatment for the viral infection.

Genital Warts Removal through Aggressive Modalities

Topical medications will not have substantial effect on larger HPV genital warts and the preferred treatment is surgical intervention. This modality is the preferred option for conditions involving pregnant women. An intense light beam is used to surgically remove the genital warts. This aggressive treatment option is most appropriate if the condition is already widespread. Doctors may recommend other forms of highly invasive or aggressive procedures including cryotherapy, electrocautery and surgical incision.
