Barcelona Columbus Monument: A key attraction of Barcelona
One of the popular attractions of Barcelona, the Columbus Monument is a stunning 197-foot tall tower dedicated to the famous explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus. Located at the southern edge of La Ramblas, a prominent street at the heart of Barcelona, the Christopher Columbus Monument is a key landmark of the city.
One of the finest examples of 19th century Catalan architecture, the monument was constructed for the first international exhibition of Spain, held in 1888. The monument comprises of a Corinthian column that stands on an octagonal pedestal. On top of the column stands a 24 feet tall bronze statue of Christopher Columbus. The statue of Christopher Columbus depicts the explorer facing towards the New World with his right index finger pointing in the direction of the Americas. The Spanish word “Tierra”, which means land, is inscribed on the short plinth that supports the statue.
The pedestal of the monument is adorned with statues of griffins and winged victories. People related to Columbus and his voyages to the New World are represented in the portrait medallions on the buttresses against the pedestal. Statues representing Catalonia, Leon, Castile and Aragon are positioned against the buttresses. There are four more statues at the base of the monument. Important scenes associated with Columbus’ first voyage to the New World are depicted in the bas-relief panels of the plinth. The regions visited by Columbus in the Americas are represented in the coats-of-arms in between the bas-relief panels. Statues of lions encircle the monument at the base.
What to see
Four staircases at the base of the monument lead to the elevator in the column. The elevator takes visitors to a viewing platform, at the base of the bronze statue of Columbus, offering a magnificent view of Barcelona and its urban landscape. Barcelona Football Club and Museum Tour
If you're a die-hard football fan, there's no greater attraction in Barcelona than a tour of the famous Barcelona Football Club (FC) and museum, one of the biggest draws for tourists in Barcelona. The tour is self-guided so there are no guides to take you around. You are free to walk through the special barriers and rope-ways, with signs to point you in the right direction. There are plenty of security personnel around to assist you. Audio-guides are available at the entrance and it's a great idea to pick up one of these to give you more information as you go along.
The magnificent Camp Nou stadium which can seat up to 100,000 screaming fans is itself a great place to start the tour and provides a glimpse of the high-voltage excitement that accompanies a match here. Visitors can avail of the Tour Plus tickets which allow them to access the cordoned-off areas as well and provide a more authentic feel of the club and players.
The tour begins with a ten-minute 3D show giving the main attractions of the stadium and since you're probably here with your kids, they would enjoy this very much as well. The show is a quick run-through of what it's like to be out there on the field during a match. Shots of famous matches are also included. Once you're done with the show, it's time for the real thing!
Next up is the visitor's changing rooms. These are relatively spartan and there is a huge circular communal bath with a jacuzzi here, though your audio guide informs you that the home team's changing rooms are much more luxurious, with a spa, pharmacy and treatment rooms. However, you get a great idea of what it's like in the shower stalls and dressing rooms just before or after a match.
The Barcelona FC puts its faith firmly in the Almighty! The in-house chapel is where they pray for destruction of their enemies and success for themselves.
From here, it's into the players' tunnel and the atmosphere here is simply electric even on a non-match day. It's not difficult to imagine emerging from that tunnel into the lime-light as thousands of shrieking fans greet their favorite players.
The benches or dugouts are where the managers and coaches sit and this is really close to the pitch. It's easy to visualize the heat and excitement of the game from this vantage point. The Press Room for media comments, the hospitality center and the sponsors' room are other important areas.
