History

The drum has been around for thousands of years it has been used by many different cultures for a variety of reasons. such as enter, religious purposes, celebration, and ceremonies.For the mikmaq it has been used to tell stories of hunting, wars, ceremonies, it was also considered sacred because it represented many different things. today it is mainly used for entertainment and to showcase dancers with specialty songs.

The meaning

The drum is sacred to the mikmaq because the beat represents your heart beat. The drumstick represents your father and the drum your mother and when they unite in rhythm that is you heart beating. It has been used for ceremonies such as the medicine song to help people heal when using traditional medicines and honor songs to honor veterans, grieve, lost loved ones and for other significant reasons.

The Modern Drum

Today the drum incorporates other tribal features such as the western drum, and the style of chanting has changed, it has the style that is often referred to as Intertribal, that has become very popular throughout Indian country.
