BlackBoard Response

Jordan begins the essay by stating how her class reacted to Alice Walker's The Color purple, she states they criticized the language she used in the book but their own language was similar. She states that putting the label on SE as the only form of English in America gives it less value. Jordan defines Black English by giving guidelines that must be followed in order for it to be called Black English.  For example on page 320 guide line number one reads Minimal number of words for every idea. She does go beyond grammatical features by speaking of the history of BE. She states that it was created to keep African Americans identity alive. The article brings up the issue of social class. I believe that it is wrong it implies that African Americans have little identity in America. I think the students were wrong I believe it made the police take them less seriously. I based my opinion on  the  fact of how  African  Americans  are  criticized  far  more than other races based on the way they speak.
