Hello, denizens of the internet!

Before you is a site accumulating research and discussion on how fathers (and men generally) are represented in media, paying close attention to the "Stupid Dad" stereotype. Fathers are often portrayed as incompetent and lazy when it comes to anything domestic, unable to be trusted with household tasks. Some of the academic literature discussing media indicates that this portrayal of fatherhood and manliness is on the rise, meriting some discussion about what effect this stereotype has on American culture.

How did this portrayal come about? How does it relate to actual modern households? What does the "Stupid Dad" image tell men and women about gender roles?

This project hopes to provide a little clarity. There's a review of the academic literature on representations of men and fathers in advertising, and a meta-analysis of the discourse surrounding the "Stupid Dad" trope.
