What are the Different Types of TVs?

Purchasing a television can be a challenge. This is especially true if you aren't aware of the different types of models that are out there.  Keep in mind that models range from plasma to LCDs and even tubes. And understanding what each one has to offer is very important. With that being said, let’s dive deeper and take a look at the different types of TVs that are out there.

Tube TVs

Commonly referred to as “Direct View” TVs, tube televisions are probably the types of units that you saw growing up. Their sizes can reach forty inches but typically don’t go any larger than that. Their picture quality is descent for the most part and their pricing is almost impossible to beat compared to other models on the market. One of the downsides is that they can be quite bulky and difficult to lug around. With that being said, they do come in a variety of models and designs and do offer amazing value for your dollar.

Digital Light Processing TVs

This type of TV was created back in 1987 and aren't as common as they used to be. Their name derived from their ability to harness incoming light to produce images. They use special optical semiconductors to create pixels on a screen. Also known as “DMD Chips”, these semiconductors are made up of well over one million tiny mirrors. Keep in mind that each one of these mirrors is fractions smaller than that of a human hair. With that being said, they are still available on the market today and do have a relatively long lifespan.

LCD TVs

No matter what model you choose, the LCD TV is almost never a bad choice- if you can afford it. The reason for its name is because it is filled with small crystals that are full of liquid. These liquids are then electrically charged to produce an image on the screen. Due to their portability and lightweight design, these TVs are often used as monitors for external devices like laptops. And since they aren't prone to burn-in, it makes them quite durable. One of the only downsides to these models is that they can often be quite expensive. But they are definitely worth it.

Plasma TVs

Finally, let’s talk about plasma TVs, probably one of the more popular models on the list. These are often recognized by their massive screens that are equally matched by their high pricing. The majority of plasma units are forty to sixty inches and offer amazing image quality. This is actually one of their prime benefits. With plasma TVs, you’ll have access to top-of-the-line color contrast as well as deeper darks that are rich and recognizable- even in darker scenes.

Conclusion

So, which model makes for the best buy? Well, it really depends. Keep in mind that what you pay for in technology and efficiency will come out of your wallet. On the flip-side  you can purchase relatively cheap units like the tube DLP and save yourself a lot of money with a descent model TV.

My dream TV is a new Panasonic LED one. I stick with the brand for a while, I'm happy with it. Their new organic LED technology is impressive, but until I can afford one I will have to choose one from the 50 inch size LED TVs: http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/Products/VIERA+TV/VIERA+Overview/285290/index.html
