Colombo and its captivating attraction


Colombo, the capital and largest city Sri Lanka might appear as a maze of streets, housing block and dilapidated colonial buildings but it is not all, the city has to showcase. Delve deep in to the city and visits its old streets and you will be convinced that judging a book by the cover is not always a right idea. Colombo National Museum

Also referred as the Sri Lanka National Museum, this largest museum in the island country was founded in the 1870s under the colonial rule. The magnificent white building showcases the colonial architectural of that period. On your visit you can see collections of royal regalia that include the throne and crown jewels of the kings of Kandy. Other items on display reflect on the colorful history of ancient Sri Lanka. The museum has added several new features in the recent years.


Gangaramaya Temple

Some worshippers refrain from visiting the site saying it has more to do with business then spirituality. If you are also one you might be missing a great attraction. This Buddhist temple adjacent to Beira Lake in the center of Colombo is arguably the most colorful shrine in Colombo. Established in the late 19th century as a center for preparing monks, it is full of Buddha statues of different styles that include Thai, Sri Lankan and Burmese. A museum situated nearby showcases a collection of jade and ivory Buddha’s, an old Rolls-Royce, and the first Mercedes in Sri Lanka.


Mount Lavinia

The beach lovers should go to beaches of Mount Lavinia which can easily be reached from Colombo. The tourist should avoid weekends when it is frequented by a large number of travelers to come to stroll and generally unwind. These beaches get preference over beaches closer to the center than this, as these are wider and cleaner and come with extensive facilities like eating and drinking.


Talangama Wetland

Just a short drive east from Colombo Talamgama offers a respite from the hustle bustle of the city. The wetland around the small Talangama Lake is highly popular among nature lovers and those want to take a stroll. The bird lovers can spot 100 bird species here. One can also spot reptiles, monkeys butterflies and dragonflies. If you are also looking for a change from the city life then a visit to this place is highly recommended.


Wolvendaal Church

A beautiful church built by Dutch reminds that Sri Lanka has been a former colony of the Netherlands; this beautiful Dutch Reform Church was founded around 1740. The church still held services on Sunday mornings.
