The Moving Peeps

The first step to any move is finding moving companies in your area that you can rely on to handle your belongings and get them to their new location safely. That may sound simple enough, but that is not always the case.

There is such a wide variety of moving companies. You will find the small independent movers to large franchise type national services and realize that moving companies range in offerings, size and of course...cost. Your main goal is to find local movers that meet your needs, expectations and budget. To do this, you need to ask some important questions like:

What is your availability? Start with asking if the company is even available on your moving date.

What experience do you have? Be sure that the company you choose has experienced movers who know how to handle all sorts of problems (like narrow staircases).

How many men can I expect to handle this job? The more men available, the quicker and easier the day will go.

What services do you offer? Some moving companies unload the truck into the garage, while others take furniture and boxes to individual rooms if they are clearly marked. Other movers actually pack belongings for you (and even unpack), while others set up furniture, but leave the boxes for the homeowner to handle. Be sure that you clearly understand the types of services each company offers.

What is the cost? Again, this is an area in which it pays to ask a lot of detailed questions. Some movers charge by the hour; others by the distance and still others by the pound. There are even some which charge a combination of these fees by charging a set hourly fee; another fee for extra poundage and of course gas/mileage fees. Be sure you understand exactly what services you are paying for and how much the cost will be.

What insurance coverage do you offer? No matter how careful movers may be, things are bound to get broken during any move; even if it is only across town. In many cases, your homeowners insurance will cover the breakage, but not always so check with your agent about your responsibility for household items during a move. Oftentimes moving companies offer separate movers insurance to cover the loss or breakage of items. In many instances this coverage is unnecessary and expensive since the homeowners insurance likely covers these costs. Still, depending on the type of personal items being moved, your insurance coverage and the length of the move, you might want to purchase extra coverage just in case. Also, be sure that the movers have their own policy in the event the truck is in an accident, which would require their auto insurance to cover the cost of replacing your damaged items.

Does the mover offer storage facilities? In the event you must vacate your current home before your new one is ready to move into, you may need to store your household items. Ask about the availability and cost of storage space. Even if your move is a short one, it may be necessary to store your items overnight. In this case, you will want to know if they will be left locked in an unattended truck or if the truck will be stored in a warehouse overnight.
