A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot, molten rock, ash, and gases to escape from below the surface. Volcanic activity involving the extrusion of rock tends to form mountains or features like mountains over a period of time.

Introduction

A valcano is a location where magma, or hot melted rock from within a planet, reaches the surface. It may happen violently, in a massive supersonic explosion, or more quietly, as a sticky, slow lava flow.

Volcanoes have been a part of history long before humans. Compare the histoy of human beings, a few million years in the making, to that of the earth, over four billion years in the making.

Most Active Volcanoes:

  • Stromboli
  • Yasur
  • Ambrym
Types of Volcanoes:
  1. Shield Volcanoes
  2. Strato Volcanoes
  3. Rhyyolite Complexes
  4. Shield Volcanoes

On May 18, 1980, after a long period of rest, this quiet mountain in Washington provided detailed observation on mechanics of highly explosive eruptions.

Volcanic Places on Mars

Mars has its fair share of valcanic landforms, including the largest known valcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons.
