As a construction professional, it is hard to see why you need a blog on your website. It is easier to set it and forget it, as they say. One of the biggest mistakes I see in construction websites is that they are stagnant. A lot of companies have really nice looking websites with lots of info, but they find that the website just doesn’t perform as well as expected. Here is why you MUST have a blog on your website. Maybe two.

Blogs do two very important things. They offer your potential clients a way to get to know you, to build trust in you. And, they help you get to the top of Google searches.
Both of these are crucial to making your website work for you. Lets take a look at the first reason.

Blogs offer your potential clients a way to get to know you.

When a client lands on your website it is because they are looking for your service. If you a plumber, the client is there because they need a plumber. If your website is typical, and only has some cursory info about your business, the client doesn’t really know anything about you. They know that you are a contractor, but they don’t have any way to connect with you personally. On the other hand, if you have an active blog with recent posts, the client has a way to “interact” with you. They can learn a little about you and the way that you work. Even if they don’t actually read anything that you’ve written, you will be steps ahead of the competition because the client knows that you are actively involved with your business.

People are generally inclined to hire people that they know. If a home owner calls three strangers to solicit bids, they will almost always hire the one who they feel most connected with. Price, history, and skill have little to do with the purchasing decision for most buyers. Most purchases are made based on feelings and emotions. Your job is to make your client feel more connected to you than the others on the list. A blog on your website is one step in that direction.

Search Engines love blogs.

This is the most important reason to start a blog on your site. Google loves blogs. If you are constantly updating your website you will blow your competition out of the water. Most contractors are so lazy with their websites and web marketing that even the simplest of updates will send your website to the top of the search engine results.

Its really easy to do also. You don’t have to be a great writer. You can and should keep it short and sweet. Short and regularly updated content on your site will be the key factor in your google ranking. My company is on the top of every major search engine because of this simple practice.

What should I write about?

Your blog could be about anything. I recommend updating your blog every time you finish a job. Post pictures, and a little write up of the job. Also include any testimonials that you’ve collected from the clients.

Another option is an “ask the contractor” type blog. These are an easy way to get some social credibility and show that you really know what you are talking about. You can answer simple questions about your industry or trade. Keep it short and sweet and you will be amazed at how well it works.
