The Characters

The hero of this comic series is Tintin. He is a young belgian reporter, always accompanied by his fox terrier dog called Snowy (Milou in French).

Through Tintin's adventures, several other characters, which will became Tintin's friends, will appear. One of them is Captain Haddock , very cynical but yet very loyal in friendship. Another one is Professor Calculus, a very intelligent scientific but also hearing impared which brings very funny situations.

Other characters like incompetent police detectives Thomson and Thompson, opera singer Bianca Castafiore and of course, Tintin's ennemies such as Dr Muller and Rastapopoulos will appear along these adventures.

The Settings

Herge set up Tintin's adventures in a realistic 20th Century. Tintin lives in Belgium but travels most of his time to help his friends or stop his ennemies from harming innocent people or conducting illegal activities. In this context, Herge mixed real and fictional countries and places in his stories. As an example, he invented two countries, Borduria and Syldavia in King's Ottokar's Sceptre and many other fictional places like San Theodoros in South America and Khemed in the Middle East.

Herge also conducted a lot of researches to make sure his drawings and stories were realistic. He really started this reasearch work with the 4th album; The Blue Lotus. For the albums Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon, he made a miniature of the rocket that Tintin and his friends will use to go to the Moon.
