What should I look for when buying used clubs?

Going to your local sporting goods store or golf club and checking out the prices on sets of new golf clubs is enough to make your head spin. To say that they are charging an arm and a leg for clubs might be a bit of an understatement. You’re looking to get into the game of golf without having to take out a second mortgage on the house so you’re thinking you’ll skip the expensive new sets of golf clubs and try your hand at some used clubs that go for a far more reasonable price. The big thing about buying used golf clubs is making sure you know what you’re looking for before you make the purchase so you know you’re getting a good set of clubs at a fair price.

The first thing you should look into is the size of the clubs to make sure they fit you. Generally most clubs come in the same length but if you are rather tall or short you should make sure that the clubs work with your swing to make sure that everything flows properly for you when you make contact with the ball.

You’ll want to look at the faces of the clubs to see how worn they are. You don’t want clubs with all the grooves on the club heads completely worn out or for there to be any rust on the shaft or faces of the clubs. Look for chips or other imperfections in the club head that could be problems for you when it comes to being able to make proper contact with the ball. Don’t stress too much over having problems with the grips on the clubs as getting a club regripped isn’t that costly a process and can be done shortly after buying the clubs.

You may not even need a full set of clubs when it comes to buying a set of used clubs. Your local course might not have any holes that truly need a driver so you can get away with just using a 3 wood and a 5 wood and a smaller collection of irons to be able to make all the shots you need to make. If you truly need to invest in a driver you can get that by itself. Also finding a great putter is vital to being able to get low scores so if you’re not happy with the putter in a used golf set feel free to skip it and go shopping for something that fits you style better.

Finally you do want modern clubs. Clubs that have more forgiving sweet spots and offer more utility on the course. Having clubs that don’t punish you severely for mishitting the ball and can be used in many different situations is a huge advantage over having clubs that don’t allow you to make mistakes. Make sure the clubs you’re getting are of a more recent age so that you’re not spending your time out on the course getting angry because every little mistake is magnified by your shoddy clubs.
