A Wee Bit About Scotland
Scotland is part of the
United Kingdom. It is a sovereign country in its own right, occupying the
northern most part of the island of Britain.
For many New Zealanders’,
Scotland is an ancestral home; a large number of Scottish people who were
forced off the land during the Highland clearances of the 18th century ended up migrating to countries such as Canada, America, Australia and New
Zealand.
While not necessarily
beautiful from a purely scenic standpoint, the immense scale and haunting bleakness
of the Highland mountains can make a person feel insignificant. Added to this,
the poignant stories of human struggle carried on within the Highland glens (valleys)
stirs a tourist’s emotions in empathy for those souls who made this place
their home, many centuries ago.
