SITE FIVE

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/05/0506_050506_mummycurse.html

This is one of my favorite sites. It tries to give a logical explanation of the cause of Lord Carnarvon's death. Lord Carnarvon (picture in Photo Tab) was the archeologist who funded Howard Carter's excavation of the tomb. He was also one of the very first to lay eyes inside the tomb. He died shortly after his encounter with the tomb and the mummy from a mosquito bite. It only made sense to blame it on the curse. However, scientists of this day and time blame the toxins like molds or staphylococcus that had been inside the tomb when he entered. The article continues with a Professor explaining that there is no evidence of any archeologist or tourist to become ill over such incidents. She goes on to say, "There are countless examples of tombs being infected by people, rather than tombs infecting people." This article was written in 2005 with today's technology to run numerous test giving the chance to prove the curse wrong. The scientific fact could not be proven and still remains a mystery.

This site gives information in a bit more detail of what we have reviewed thus far. It reviews the death of Carter's Canary, more statistics of the deaths, and a comparison of King Tut's wound to Lord Carnarvon's insect bite/wound causing his death. The mummy when unwrapped was found to have a wound on the left cheek in the same exact position as the insect bite on Carnarvon. Quite an interesting match up between the two.
Toward the bottom of the page, the section entitled "A Rational Explanation?" gives more scientific explanations to what may have caused the deaths rather than the curse. For Example, Dr. Nicola Di Paolo found another possible fungus called Aspergillus ochraceusas, which has not been shown to be fatal.
