Swim Safe 2009

Knowing what to do could could save a life

The aim of Swim Safe is to educate parents, teachers, anyone responsible for a child and even children themselves on the importance of water safety so as to prevent drownings and water related accidents among the children of Metropolis.

Organised by Metropolis Water Safety (MWS), Swim Safe is a one-day event held at Metropolis Swimming Pool.
On the day there will be a host of activities aiming at reducing tragic pool and water related mishaps including:


  • first aid demonstrations with Bronze medallion certified instructors

  • introductory learn-to-swim classes for both adults and children
    ** new to this years events is a parent and bub class to introduce your child to water in the safest way possible - in your arms **

  • demonstrations of water safety products including all new safey pool fencing, flotation devices and other equipment

  • Safety tip sheets and free giveaways

RISK FACTORS?

Here are a few risk factors that can be addressed using simple measures:

Lack of barriers and supervision - Children under one year most often drown in bathtubs, buckets, or toilets. Between the agesof 1 to 4 years, most drownings occur in residential swimming pools.

Age and recreation - Drownings in natural water settings such as lakes, rivers, or the ocean increases with age. The main cause of drowning of children over the age of 15 occurs in natural water settings.
