Back in 2003, Thom was running his first Dark Ages: Vampire Chronicle when two of his players, Evan and Paul, got a job at a local buffet restaurant.

The details are sketchy, but the most understood story is that they somehow found out that people that belonged to leagues such as pool, darts and bowling would be scheduled off the evenings that they had league play. Since they played Vampire on Saturday nights and Saturday is usually the one night you are always required to work, they needed a valid reason to have off Saturday nights to play.

Originally, they put on their applications that they belonged to the Strizek Saturday Night Gaming League. It served its purpose and they actually got off on Saturday nights for Vampire!

They, of course, told Thom about their success and he adopted it, changing the name slightly to the Strizek Gaming League, asserting that they didn't play on Saturdays alone (He pointed out the infamous "21 Games in 21 Days" event the year before) and the League was born from there.

It was kicked around for a couple years jokingly that the League needed a logo, and it got one when Thom decided to make himself a League business card. The software he used also asked for a motto.

One of the Original Founding Members, Taylor, suggested a number of mottos, one of them being the now-official motto, "Gaming to the next level."

Ideas got kicked around for a few more years, titles such as "Founding Member," "Mentor" and "Founder" were added and finally in 2007, member cards were made and the first official League-Sanctioned Event occurred with the invitation-only session that both introduced the new World of Darkness rules and announced Thom's final game.

Now, a full two years later still, some of the Senior Members and Founding Members play league TCGs and complain endlessly that there is just no sportsmanship in some of the leagues (YuGiOh is a big one for that) Even Bob, a Senior Member and the person that runs a local YuGiOh kids' league in the area, has considered pulling out of regular league play because there just isn't any type of sanction against that type of behavior.

Magic: the Gathering has long been a game of unfair advantage and entirely too many Storytellers and Dungeon Masters enjoy killing off their players, as well as far too many players trying to manipulate their GMs into oblivion.

That's when the League really started to solidify.

Our goal is to have everyone play fair, not run "broken" decks in a regular tournament, win well, lose well and have penalties for people that are rude, mean and, frankly, act bully-like. Positives for good playership, negatives for bad playership, good times for all.

We aren't just gaming here, we're gaming to the next level.
