Effective Mingling and Working the Room

Tips from the Keynote Speaker Susan RoAne

Have you been invited to a social or business event such as a wedding, a business gathering, a high school or college reunion, a charity event, or a fund raiser? If your answer to this question is a yes, then you need to make sure that you come prepared in knowing what to do and how to properly conduct yourself during these events. In order for you to stand out from the crowd during social parties and business gatherings, you should follow these effective mingling and working the room tips from the renowned keynote speaker, Susan RoAne.

Before entering the venue of the social gathering or business event, take a couple of death breaths. Once you enter the room, observe your surroundings and familiarize yourself with the areas that are commonly visited by the other guests of the gathering. Check out the food area, the bar area, the gathering spots, and the areas that are packed with people. Take time to search the crowd for people that you know who you should go to and greet. Before introducing yourself to another person, read his or her name tag. Offer a smile and a firm handshake.

Introduce yourself. Keep in mind that a self introduction is just what it is: an introduction. Thus, when you introduce yourself, make sure that this is only brief and should only take about 7 to 9 seconds. If you go beyond this time frame, the person that you are talking to might think of you as someone who just wants to talk about him or herself. Once the other guest has introduces him or herself, the next step for you to do is to come up with small talk topics that are interesting and that are great icebreakers. This will help you find a topic of conversation that the person you are talking to is also interested in.
