Interior designers are renowned for knowing and employing all the tricks of the trade in order to make a room seem lighter, brighter and more spacious. There are other tricks too to make a room feel more cosy and intimate. It is probably better to describe such “tricks” as methods and techniques as no real trickery is involved just harnessing and making good use of what a room or house already has to offer.

Some furniture designers have, though, of late, thrown all semblance of seriousness aside in an effort to fool, astound and ultimately to charm us all with what, on the surface appears to be nothing but outright trickery. They are asking us to, in the words of that famous nineties rock band Guns 'n' Roses, use their illusions to inject a little humour and levity to spice up the décor of our homes. Here are just a few of our

Self Shelf

.

Self shelf is a sturdy book shelf that gives the illusion of your books somehow floating in the air. I would bet if you put a chair underneath one of these with even without a single book on it, no guest would sit there. The trick is the shelf is designed to look like a book. The 'book's' title should be a dead give away for any art lover or individual with even a basic grasp of the French language, “Ceci n'est pas une livre” the spine reads: “This is not a book.”

Impossible Furniture - Create an Illusion

“Impossible” furniture is not the only surprise designers have up their sleeves. Playing with scale can really draw attention to the form and function of the mundane and ignored. Couple larger items with smaller ones or use classic styled furniture against an all-white backdrop for jaw dropping impact. A great example of impossible furniture is a floating bed. Kind of like the self shelf but on a larger scale!

So, why play along, why use such pieces in your home? The best reason of all has to be that these frivolous and really quite joyous pieces of furniture, art and even utensils are the most fantastic of  talking points. They will liven up any interior design scheme and make you smile for years to come. Equally by choosing designs like these you will be bagging yourself high quality pieces that will last for years.
