The Land of Windmills

:::::::Applications:Microsoft Office 2008:Office:Media:Clipart:Photos.localized:j0182665.jpgThe Netherlands has been known as the Land of Windmills, and now add tulips and tourist.

Tourism is a major industry in The Netherlands.  In addition to Amsterdam, the annual tulip festivals and the preservation of Dutch windmills are must see tourist attractions.   Have no fear American tourists, the Dutch language can be intimidating to try to understand, but it is not necessary to learn to travel in this lovely country.  The Dutch people pride themselves on being a multilingual nation and everyone being trained in English.

Direct flights from Houston to Amsterdam for May

Continental Airlines flies direct to Amsterdam once per day.  There are various routes and obviously more options, but for the traveler in the know this is the way to go.  Flights can range from $300 per traveler in the winter off season to $1800 in peak season.  May is a popular month due to the Tulip Festivals, and flights are well over $1000 US.

Required travel documentation

You will need a Passport to travel internationally, but travelers with US Passports do not need tourist visas.  If you decide you like it and want to stay you would need a visa for work.  American tourists are welcome, but it is difficult to get a work visa on short notice.

The Netherlands is a world leader in water and water resource research.

Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP)

The NWP is an independent body set up by the Dutch private sector and the government. Its function is to serve as a national centre for coordinating and collecting information about all water-related activities carried out overseas. The most important task of the NWP is to harmonize the international activities and initiatives of the Dutch water sector and to promote Dutch expertise in the field of water.

Holland or The Netherlands?

Holland and the Netherlands are not two names for the same country, but rather that Holland is the former name for part of the country.  The black section of the map to the left is the current Holland, the gray area is the rest of The Netherlands.

Today, Holland constitutes two out of a total of twelve provinces that make this country, and the border between them can just be seen in this map.
