Think vertical when decorating small spaces

With the new trend of micro studios, dorm style studios, and loft studios in large cities across the United Kingdom, young professionals face the challenge of making a space beautiful, and functional on a budget. Frequently these small spaces have high ceilings, which is an advantage to the micro studio dwellers. But many people forget about this vertical space after squeezing in a bed, a place to sit and even a desk. If this sounds familiar, here are some tips from the home décor experts at http://www.handmaderetail.co.uk that will help you get the most out your living space.

So once you have your furniture in place now is the time to think vertical and think storage. One unique approach to decorating in large cities is using found items or re-purposing items. One item I love to re-purpose is milk crates. You can find them at most restaurants and look small corner stores. To create a functional wall shelf unit you will need about 10 crates. A piece of press board or remnants of a shipping pallet, a pack of zip ties, and if you want to get super creative two cans of spray paint.

Now it's time to make your perfect Tetris wall, if you were lucky you were able to get two different sizes of crates. First, create a base with three of the crates. Then create vertical towers on each side, the structure will look like a U. Now place the piece of wood across the top of the U. Now you can add crates into the empty space and stack the rest in a manner that will give you the storage you need. Use the zip ties to secure each of the crates together for added support and then spray paint to match your decor. Now you have a self unit which will fill a nice sized wall, you can use it as a book shelf, or make shift closet by adding boxes for drawers and a rod across the inside of the U. Or it can be an entertainment center were you mount a tv in the U and store you electronics in the other crate because of the open style of the crates you will have increase air flow around the equipment and easy wire maintenance.

Now that you have created your Tetris wall and are starting to think vertical in small spaces. Think of other ways you can re-purpose, re-use and re-new found items to create beautiful and unique living environments. OH and the best thing about the crate shelf, when it's time to move you simple cut apart the crates and you have all the moving boxes you will need.
