“Human Rights”

What happens when these two words surface on our minds? For most of us it might be a retrospection of a terrible and harrowing social-science lesson which had often lulled us to sleep in the class! Why would we even give two hoots about something that looks so complicated and long to even glance through, tedious and mind-numbing to listen and hard to understand? Human Rights is nothing but an old, long forgotten chapter in some dusty-musty book.

And yet when the very two words are shifted from the tableau called textbook and descend down upon a real-life scenario, we scratch our heads baffled. This is because the subject we had so obstinately upheld as boring and hard to find a connect with is actually a relatable and universal phenomenon brimming with its own life. Why, even the daily happenings around our own vicinity are somehow linked to the term above and still we overlook its real magnitude to only focus on by hearting some textbook definition. And then when we confront problems such as discrimination, insecurity, ill-treatment etc, we start fumbling for words to stand up against these atrocities since we are utterly clueless about what next to do and how to deal with them.  Some of us even are totally unaware of as to whether we had been taken for a ride and whether some of the rights that we are entitled to had been violated.

To avoid dealing with such distastefully helpless and desolate situations, it is thus imperative that one is completely knowledgeable, well informed and educated about their fundamental rights and duties so that they can duly recognize and stand up to injustices of any shape or size. Ignorance is definitely not bliss over here and awareness of one’s rights and duties is truly divine.

For people out there who feel out of place and embarrassed in admitting that they know nothing about human rights, here is the definition for you, albeit the textbook way.   Human rights, simply put are those rights that through strictly enforced laws present a new hope and promise to certain disadvantaged groups so that they can be placed at the same level and offered the same opportunity as the others.  For instance, the right to scholarships to the intelligent yet poor and needy students ensures that they get the maximum education that they were deprived of due to their economical status. However there are few human rights that are fundamental and include all the citizens of a particular country under its umbrella. The Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 strictly prohibits any discrimination against anyone on religious or racial grounds. Regardless of their religion or race, a person has to be treated equally before the eyes of the law just like the others. The foremost type of violation of a human right is in the form of discrimination.  Discrimination is the unfavourable treatment of someone just because they belong to a certain background, gender or religion which though is upheld by the constitution, it is opposed by the offender in question.  Discrimination of anyone is a seriously offensive violation and the accused in question has to face dire consequences. There are many types of discrimination but the one that is relevant in today’s times is discrimination in the work place. It is first important to understand the rights of workers. At the outset, a worker is entitled to being introduced to the terms and conditions of the company before getting employed. After the employment, the company should adhere to its terms and conditions.  Get more information over here if you want to know the other rights of the workers.

So, if you get to know that you are deprived and violated of your rights at the workplace what would you do? You should approach such a body that is free from influence from other existing bodies like political parties or even your employer’s company in question. It should also know how to settle the score between two parties amicably. The example that strikes most of our heads will most evidently be courts. But did you know that even Human Rights Commissions are allowed to undertake the task of justly taking up cases? The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission is one such prestigious institution. To know more on how to deal with discrimination at the workplace find out here.

Thus it is the duty of every citizen of a particular country to familiarize with their Human Rights!!
