Homeschool Math - Pick Competence Above Excellence
Many homeschool families struggle with children who have an understanding of math concepts but are careless in going through their schoolwork. The direct result is math problems that are repeatedly erroneous, not because they don't fully understand, but because they hurried through and made silly setbacks (adding mistakenly, erroneous decimal placement, etc. )#) Parents might be driven to distraction because they want their children to be careful when doing their work, rather than hurrying through and generating slips. So how should a homeschool parent manage chronic carelessness?
Carelessness, especially with math, is a tricky matter. Homeschool parents would like their kids to grow, comprehend a topic and reach mastery. Parents really want their kids to learn about diligence, and the rewards of doing the job very well. But there is one more side to carelessness that you should give consideration to.
I know this might surprise some of you, but when I subtract a purchase in my checkbook, I don't always get the solution perfectly correct. From time to time I slip up, get the solution wrong, and have to search until I find the arithmetic oversight so that it levels out just as before. And yet, I truly do believe I have realized mastery over subtraction (on most days! )#)
Competence is distinct from perfection. Your homeschooled child may show competence by scoring 90% on an assignment (they may even have mastery with below that, I guess! )#) Kids shouldn't need to be "perfect" though. Now, to be truthful, when homeschooling I did have my children correct all their math errors in their day to day work. When they got it incorrect, they fixed it. I hoped that the tediousness of fixing would stimulate them to be more thorough in their daily work. Being thorough is a wonderful thing, right? Just don't go from "attentive" into "flawlessness. " Striving for flawlessness can induce strife, and possibly rebellion. Because we all understand, intuitively, that we plainly can't be perfect.
If you have this situation, here are some thoughts you can try in your household. Hold your kids to a higher standard (perhaps 90% correct. )#)
Have them do one half the problems in the math book to give them some more time to get the job done carefully.
Have them redo the problems they miss so they can fully understand their issues.
As a rule, keep away from perfection, and endeavor as an alternative for mastery. Tell your kids that 90% is what you consider competence.
