Reporter Claire Brownell is spending seven days in Detroit, showcasing the positive ways the city has changed and the challenges that still remain. Below is a Live Blog of her Day 5 journey across 8 Mile Road and below that is a synopsis of what she has planned for Day 5:White Detroiters left the city en masse after the 1967 riot. Things are looking up for Detroit, but the polarization between the residents of the city and its suburbs is still stark and a serious problem. Take a drive along Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe if you want to see the opposite of the crumbling blight that everywhere in Detroit.


But there more to Detroit suburbs than Mitt Romney and his family at the country club playing polo. Ferndale and Royal Oak, in particular, have interesting retail and great restaurants, with people packing the streets and patios on weekend nights.


On Thursday, I planning to examine both sides of the suburbs. I visit 8 Mile Wall, which was built in the as a literal barrier between black and white neighbourhoods in the city northwest. I take in some swanky mansions in addition to some less stuffy trendy spots.
