Australia & The Pacific Forum

The journey east alongside the southern tier of the Australian continent was wealthy with epic geography and botanical beauty. The street curling between big Karri bushes in the Margaret River Valley was a clean tarmac enclosed by the tallest hardwoods rising on the planet and down close to Esperance there were mountains rising up out of the ocean and cheap bungalows set alongside the palisades with views that might cost tens of tens of millions in Malibu or Monterrey. I assumed this was what Southern California will need to have looked like before the arrival of the rental builders and the road pavers.

In the same space is the Western Australia ArtGallery. We have been operating out of time soonly had a brief time to check it out but it looked good. Thereare two excellent museums in Fremantle and the gaol, but it was so sizzling I didn’tdare point out visiting any of them and we have been all beginning to get 'museumed out'.

This space has a cell inspector every so often and there's danger of fines if travellers are stopped and Quarantine Danger Material is found. The Nullabor was afire in late January. Brush was burning and the winds have been shifting it southward. The well-known ninety-mile stretch of straight road lay ahead but this was Australian Independence Day and I had envisioned a number of chilly, cleaning ales at an isolated roadhouse in the Outback. Unfortunately, there was only a gravel camp website and a sign on the showers that each one snakes in the space had been toxic and that it was necessary to shut the door to maintain them from “slithering” into the bathrooms, and I had not even zipped up my tent. published here
