Ankle Boots for Women

Hi-fashion boots (not the utility, sports types or those for different climate or geographic conditions) have been a trend since the 19th century, but they gained maximum visibility during the 1960s and 70s, when they were symbols of a Bohemian life-style. Since then, boot-lengths have varied from thigh or calf length to barely-there ankle boots with trendy zips, tassels, heels and have been decorated with accessories like studs, embossing, perforations, embroidery, buttons and even gems and precious stones.

Ankle boots have been a staple on catwalks and among the trend-setters in the fashion industry for quite a while and they've never really gone out of fashion. Right now, they're a big trend in the world of haute couture, and every woman who wants to keep up with cutting-edge fashion should own a pair! They go well with a variety of skirt lengths and jeans and can be worn to work if the style is formal enough. Another feature is that in this era of unisex fashions, ankle boots can be worn by both men and women, usually with trousers and jeans.

Ankle boots can come in a variety of lengths, ranging from “booties” which are really shoes with uppers that cover the ankle, to boots that enclose the entire lower part of your calves. They are much more flattering than calf or thigh length boots that add bulk to your legs unless worn with full length jeans or trousers. However, they're perfect with outfits where you're looking for that “boot” look without the bulk.

A popular ankle boot style is the winter shoe, with a fluffy overlap. They keep your feet warm, go well with almost any kind of winter-wear, are available in a variety of designs, colors and styles.  Wedge-heeled ankle boots offer both style and comfort, the ultra stylish stiletto heeled ankle boot is great with jeans or narrow pants, buckled styles provide country-western chic, while shoe-boots, and ankle-strap boots are popular too.

Ankle boots work best with full-length skirts, both fuller or more narrow, Bohemian wrap-rounds, or skirts in light/filmy fabrics and pretty floral prints or ethnic textiles. Narrow short skirts match with ankle boots. They're ideal for wearing with most pants, but are best with skinny jeans and straight-length trousers. A fashion no-no is to tuck wide-bottomed pants into ankle boots. They're also disastrous with capris and mid-length skirts.  A range of heel styles from stiletto, flats, platforms and wedge are very popular, while materials like suede and patent leather add that touch of glamour and luxury.

Ankle boots are difficult for shorter women to wear, since they make the leg look much shorter and bulkier. One way out of this is to wear pointed toes or peep-toe styles with slimmer heels. Darker colors or those that match the boot color work well for shorter women.

With this attractive footwear trend hitting the markets this season, make sure you get a pair right away!

Wedge Shoes

Wearing high-heels may not always be comfortable and often we go with the philosophy “No pain, No gain” in an effort to look stylish and trendy. Shoes like stilettos, platforms, pumps and mules look elegant but they can be painful and cause long-term problems like back and calf muscle strain. High-heels can also cause sprains, ligament tears and fractures if you slip or twist your foot while wearing them. You can't walk fast or run in them, they shorten your stride, they cause foot deformities like calluses or bunions and lead to knee-joint degeneration. But this is the price many of us are willing to pay to look like a million bucks!

One great solution is the wedge heel. Wedge shoes were first introduced by the Italian designer Salvatore Ferragamo in the 1930s and have remained a popular choice among men and women for shoes, open-toed sandals, boots, pumps and court shoes. Here, the heel runs across the entire space under the foot and tapers off into a wedge along the sides near the heel.

Thus a single piece is used for both the sole and the heel. This shape is more stable, comfortable and durable than the conventional heeled shoes. Wedge heels can raise the foot quite high without appearing to do so and the slope is comfortably supported all along the foot and sole. The arch of the foot which takes the maximum strain in conventional high-heels is well protected in wedge shoes. Wedge shoes are one of the hottest fashion trends currently and they come in a great range of designs, patterns and colors. They go well with almost all types of outfits and are great when you have to stand or walk for long hours.

Looking at the pluses and minuses of wedge shoes: They're great for all occasions ranging from a casual stroll through a mall to a formal dinner party and they're certainly very kind to your feet. They go well with most skirt-lengths and you can carry them off with a mini-skirt or a full-length gown. The shape is very flattering to your ankles and a pair of strappy wedge heels can get you top marks at any fashionable do.

However, they are still “high-heels” so you're not completely free to run in them and if you're planning to dance till the wee hours, you could still end up with some foot pain. They tend to look more casual than stilettos or other heels and can look a little odd when paired with a formal ball gown. They're best with short skirts, wrap-arounds, shorts, wide pants, light fabrics and edgy styles and don't look good with skinny jeans or long, narrow skirts.

Wedge heels are a new trend in men's shoes and they're very comfortable while adding height but not bulk to the overall look of the shoes.
