The Central Government Employees Welfare Housing Organisation, an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Rural and Urban Affairs builds housing complexes for its employeees, both serving and retired, in various metropolitan centres. (see www.cgewho.nic.in). It awards contracts to private builders but oversees the construction and administrative matters. The cost of construction is secued from the applicants from time to time basing on the progress of work done.

The CGEWHO completed its first project in Miyapur near Kukatpally in Hyderabad in 2003. It started the second phase in Gachibowli in erly 2001 but due to initial problems over land acquisition and jurisdiction of the Cyberabad Urban Authority, the project did not get off ground till mid-2003. Constructed over an area of 2.85 acres in Gachibowli, the second phase initially planned for A, B,Cand D type flats totalling 228. But bowing to objections from the Urban Authority over setback ratio, the CGEWHO had to drop the A type single bedroom flats. With the result there could only be 78 two bedroom, 60 three bedroom and 40 four bedroom flats. There is a community hall which can be used for small functions,a courtyard with greenery and a children's play area.

The construction was halted due to heavy rains in 2004 and picked up momentum early in 2005. By January 2006 draw of lots for allotment of flats ws done and from March handing over of the dwelling units was initiated. From April onwards allottees began to occupy their flats.

There are nine blocks with seven lifts, a sewrage treatment plant, standby diesel generator, three transformers and motor pumps. Manjira(now Krishna) river water flows into a sump in the complex and is provided in one tap in the kitchen in each flat for drinking purposes. Two borewells supply water for other purposes.

The CGEWHO took up maintenance of the flats till October 2006 when it called for a general body meeting of the owners to elect a committee. The present committee looks after the day-to-day affairs.

The BSNL has installed an exchange in the complex towards the end of January 2008 and from May has provided broadband connctions.
