Cognitive Restructuring

The Catastrophe theory is a mathematical model (Hardy & Parfitt 1991) that explains that prior events producing anxiety can come back to haunt the performer in the future. This is as the prior bad experience remains through a process called conditioning and so the fear of that event returns in later simular situations. The perception of these mistakes can lead to increases in anxiety, which can lead to more performance mistakes. Cognitive Restructuring is a way to stop this theory, and is about changing the way an individual thinks. Cognitive Restructuring helps one look at bodily arousal and anxiety differently and is a method based on doing your best, and positively thinking about the situation. For this to be succesfull, one must be aware of their thoughts and feelings, so the symptons can be managed and replaced by positive thoughts. Obviously once Negative thoughts are put into your mind, Anxiety levels will increase as the fear of failure comes into it. An example in Rugby Union is simply being scared to lose the match. If you are scared to lose you will be anxious and tighten up and not perform, howver if you go with an attitude of doing your best and enjoying the game you will more likely perform to your best.
