OFL Season Gets Underway September 3

Mike Flavin will continue to become a force in the Opieville Football League when he will be entering the historic 10th anniversary of the league as the defending champion.  Flavin will head a field of over 30 players that will kick off the season on Thursday, September 3.

MIKE FLAVIN
2008 OFL Champion

Other participants expected to return are 2008 runner-up Nancy Edenfield, who came from 16 games down with three weeks to play and almost pulled off a stunning championship title run.  Edenfield finished a game behind Flavin for the league title.  Also expected to play are David Burgett, who in his first year placed a solid third, two-time former champion Lance Perdue, and other former champions Rick Rybaczek, Tony Varnadore, Todd Barfield, and Michael Hitt.

Varnadore will also be entering the 2009 season as the reigning Player of the Year.  Also participating will be Ray Guthrie, the 2008 OFL Playoffs Champion who, like Varnadore, won the title as the Plus One Wild Card entry.

For the 10th season, commissioner Opie Roberts is psyched as he hopes the historic season turns out to be the best ever.  Among the plans for the 2009 season include attempting to return former players who made a mark in the league, a new Player of the Year format, and possibly building a bigger pot.

The 2009 season kicks off on Thursday, September 3 with one of the games that day include South Carolina at NC State.  Other big contests on Saturday feature the BYU Cougars taking on the Oklahoma Sooners at the Cowboys' new stadium in Dallas and the Alabama Crimson Tide taking on the Virginia Tech Hokies in Atlanta.  The NFL season will kick off in Week 2 at the home of the reigning Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh.

OFL PROBATION

Throughout the season, teams can place themselves under OFL Probation if they do anything the commissioner feels noteworthy of the honor.  Probation can and will include being left out of the schedule for a determined amount of time decided by the commissioner, pending on the action involved.

Last season, the Duke Blue Devils were beginning their second year on OFL Probation.  They had to have three victories and be at least two games above .500 to be put on parole.  Duke finally started out 3-1 and with a victory over Virginia, they were finally eligible to play.  On the contrary, Virginia had been playing horrible to start the year and the beatdown by Duke put Virginia on probation.

The Cavaliers would have to serve a sentence until they either beat a ranked team or win a game on the road.  They were on probation for just two weeks because North Carolina came calling at home ranked 18th in the nation.  A game at Charlottesville is an automatic loss for the Tar Heels, not having won there since 1981.  They had their first shot at winning there since that year but blew it in the final minutes of regulation and lost the game in overtime.

CURRENTLY ON PROBATION

The Washington Huskies earned their spot on probation on Saturday, November 22, 2008 after falling to state and Pac-10 rival Washington State 16-13 in  double OT.  Both of these clubs were facing probation on the premise that they had a combined one victory and no wins against FBS opponents this season.

Washington was already losing head coach Ty Willingham at the end of the season and was 0-10 going into this annual "Cr"apple Cup game.  Washington State had been outscored 533-139 coming in, while the Huskies were being outplayed 399-139.  With that, this game was declared probation for the loser.

Because Washington loses, they will be on probation for the duration until they (like Duke when they got it in 2006) are two games above .500 and have at least three wins during the season.  Because they were not shutout and the game did go into OT, no further sanctions are needed.
