Eagle Scout Project
Sensory Garden for
St. Lawrence NYSARC
in Norwood, NY
by Kenny Ferguson
Slide presentation of the project
This
project involved planning and installing a sensory garden for service
recipients at the St. Lawrence NYSARC Day Habilitation Program in Norwood, NY.
Kenny spent approximately 6 months planning the project, several weeks
fundraising, and 2 months completing the installation.
Kenny and the volunteers he supervised cleared and leveled
the land; dug out a pond and installed a solar powered aerator. In addition,
Kenny and his volunteers built four sturdy benches, two raised flowerbeds and a
pergola. Kenny also planned the landscaping and obtained the gardenŐs
plants, which include raspberry and lilac bushes, as well as perennial plants
for the flower boxes that will bloom sequentially in the spring, summer and
fall. Hosta was used to line the entrance path and
wild flowers were planted to form the borders of the garden. Grass seed was
spread to cover the garden floor.
The hope is that the almost 5,000 square foot garden will
provide a pleasant place in which the trainees can relax outdoors in a
peaceful, secluded setting. Kenny was recognized by NYSARC for his successful
completion of the project at a ribbon cutting ceremony held on Friday, August
22, 2014.
Kenneth is very grateful for the support that he received
from several area businesses. JC Merriman Inc. of Norwood, Potsdam Agway
Co-op Inc., and Evans and White Ace Hardware of Potsdam all provided valuable
advice and resources for his project. In addition, he is very
appreciative of the many volunteers that helped to make his vision a reality.
