We've come a long way since then. Wall beds are making a huge comeback and it's not just in small apartments, but surprisingly in sprawling suburban neighborhoods. A few years ago, my parents decided to turn my old room into an office for my father; at the time it didn't bother me that my childhood room had been transformed into someone else's workspace. However, when I came home for the holidays and was informed I'd be sleeping on an aero bed, I was a little upset. After a day my "bed" had mostly deflated and was incredibly cold on the floor.
Yes, in a pinch a sofa, futon or blow up mattress is a great solution, but most guests would prefer to sleep on a mattress and be somewhat comfortable. Now how can you solve the space problem? You don't want the mattress taking up all that valuable space year round, so what are you going to do? Add a Murphy bed. Just keep in mind what your main objectives are for your room/space. For instance if you're looking for a play space for kids, opt for a bed with an added chalkboard on the front or if you goal is a work area for your husband, search for a bed with a drop table, this will give him extra space to spread out.
