Our mission is to save and enhance lives through organ and tissue donation, and to achieve these means through the recruitment of potential donors who are currently unaware of the great need for organ donors. We envision a world in which no one suffers due to a lack of donor organs or tissues. On average, 17 people in this country die every day - 6,600 each year - waiting for organ transplant.Today there are almost 78,000 people awaiting a kidney transplant alone in the U.S. and over 1,600 in Louisiana alone. The reason is simple -- a tragic shortage of donated organs and tissues. Amazingly just one person who donates organs (hearts, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines) can save up to eight lives, while a tissue donor (corneas, bone, skin, heart valves, tendons, veins, etc.) can improve 12 or more lives by restoring eyesight, helping fight infections in burn patients and preventing the loss of mobility and disability. Each of us out there have this awesome ability to pass on life within us. What is there in life than saving anothers. Registration is simple and quick and thats where The Pelican Initiative comes in play. As an upstart organization it is our goal to save lives through the increased number of registered organ/tissue donors in Louisiana. We hope that some day soon there will never be another life lost that could have been easily prevented by greater supply of organs/tissues, in the great state of Louisiana.
