Madrid Museums

Madrid is one of the great centers of world culture. In this article we will propose from specifics and sometimes little known of our great museums, to a visit to the smaller but exciting museums, available in the city. Galleries, theaters, auditoriums, foundations … so you know where the culture lives.

VIP TOUR MADRID, an spanish incoming agency, recommends the best Madrid Museums:

Prado Museum:  Located in a privileged place, the Prado Museum presides one of the most visited tourist itineraries of the capital. Distributed in various venues – the Villanueva building, the Cason del Buen Retiro and the new building designed by Rafael Moneo – houses the finest collection of Spanish painting that exists around the world.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: With nearly 1,000 works of art, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is located in a unique artistic and cultural route in the world. The museum invites you to take a  privileged tour around the seven centuries of the history of European painting from its beginnings in the thirteenth century to the twentieth century.

Reina Sofia Museum:  Works by Dali, Miro and Juan Gris accompany Picasso’s Guernica on an exciting journey through the history of contemporary art. The new museological plan, opened in May 2009, put into dialogue works by different authors, origins, periods and topics, to show the different sides of the cutting edge.

Sorolla Museum: In 1929, the widow of Joaquín Sorolla y Batida donated to the Spanish state the studio-house built in Madrid by the Valencian painter between 1910 and 1911. It preserves the best collection of the artist’s paintings as well as numerous other works and objects of interest, including sculptures, ceramics, furniture and jewellery. It is a unique example of an early 20th century bourgeois house.

Cerralbo Museum:  The Cerralbo Museum was originally the home of the Marquis of Ceralbo (Enrique de Aguilera y Bamboa). From the very start of its construction, the mansion was intended to house the family's collection of European furniture, paintings, armor and artifacts. Among the collections are The Ecstasy of Saint Francis of Assisi by El Greco, displays of ancient weaponry, and Iberian pottery.

Art Centers: The city is full of showrooms, foundations and cultural centers with amazing architecture and wonderful programs that you will not want to miss: La Casa Encendida, the Fine Arts Circle and Matadero Madrid are just a few of the most important.
