Time Management Tips For College Freshmen

Freshman year of college is an exciting time for students.  It’s the time when young adults take their first steps into the real world.  Class, friends, and social activities are abundant, so it is important to manage your time effectively.  It doesn’t matter if you are pursuing an accelerated degree or a traditional four-year degree.  In the following paragraphs, we will explore ways to make sure time doesn’t slip through your fingers.

Every morning, make a to-do list!  If you start the day out with a list of things you need to get done, you will be able to plan your day.  Put the most important, the most difficult tasks at the top of the list.  Once you have your big to-dos done, everything else will seem easy in comparison.  Add rewards for completing a to-do to add motivation.

As you go about your day, to-do list in hand, you may find yourself with a spare moment or two as you wait for a bus or class to start.  Use these down times to get stuff done.  You should always have your work with you so you can utilize any free moments you may find.

All people struggle with saying no.  It takes practice, but don’t be afraid to say no.  If your roommate wants to go to the movies and you need to study for an exam the next morning, it’s ok to say no.  Reschedule for a showing that works for both of you.

Designate a study time.  Decide this based on your schedule.  Are you a morning or night person?  Do you need to be in a library or can you get stuff done on a bench in the quad?  Once you have answered these questions and set up a study time, turn off your phone, don’t surf the web or check your email, just study.
