A dental hygienist is a person that is a skilled dental worker specializing in scaling and polishing teeth. They also give advice on how to properly clean teeth. Dental hygienists have an important job because they educate people of how vital their mouths are. Being involved in the health field workforce not only means being knowledgeable but having good people skills and knowing how to be personable and communicate with people.

Being a dental hygienist fits into my lifestyle because it is a Monday through Friday job with regular business hours. Being a mother of a six month old, it is a perfect job because I will be working while my son will be going to school and I will have the weekends off with him. We can definitely live comfortably off of medium annual salary of 64,000 according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Santa Fe College has really made it plausible for me to achieve one of my dreams and goals of becoming a dental hygienist. I have been taking prerequisites classes for a year now and this summer I can apply for the Dental Hygienist Program which is a two year program. After I finish the Dental Hygienist Program, I feel confident that I will find a job because of all the open positions that I have seen online at various Workforce websites. I have always known that I wanted to go into the health field but blood and guts is not for me. The goriest things you will see being a dental hygienist is a tooth being pulled, a root canal, or a tooth implantation all of which I have gone through or seen completed before.

I am looking forward to working with people especially younger kids and teaching them how important their teeth are and how to properly clean them. It will be enjoyable to see peoples’ faces after they have a clean mouth. Everybody enjoys the feeling of having clean teeth and knowing I helped someone smile more will be satisfying. Along with making people smile more, people would be comfortable asking me questions and if I did not know the answer, I would find out the answer before they left.

I feel very blessed to live in America and have the opportunity to go to college and get an education. Your education is something that no one can take away from you. I am very excited for the day that I can graduate from college with my associate’s degree and help my husband provide for our family. I have known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist for two years now and I am determined to not give up until I have accomplished my dream.
