The Great Serengeti National Park

Among the major attractions of Tanzania in the tourism arena is the Serengeti national park. The park is the most celebrated even though it is not the biggest. The most popular aspect of the Serengeti is the annual wildebeest migrations that are a major attraction and actually attracts a lot of tourists yearly. The migration involves over a million wildebeest and over 250,000 zebras. It is the best reserve in the whole of Africa basing on the fact that it is home to a great number of prey as well as predators.

The area has been used as a grazing ground by the Maasai people. They are the locals in the region and are very deep in culture. They are also known as being resilient and can handle a lot of the dangers that face them. In case you need a tour in the area, the best person for the job would be a Maasai warrior who is conversant with the whole area. Most of the Maasai however reside in highlands of Ngorongoro.

Serengeti is the oldest national park in the whole of Tanzania. It is also a great contributor to the economy with regard to the revenue realized from tourism activity. This has also helped make the surrounding areas gain popularity as well. Some of the areas include Ngorongoro reserve, Arusha national park, Tarangire and Lake Manyara.

It covers 14,763km² consisting of plains, savanna and forests and woodlands. It is also in close proximity with the Kenyan Masai Mara. There is no human habitation allowed in the park with special exceptions to research teams.

The park can be viewed in three portions. The first is the Serengeti plains. It is mainly a grass land with very little tree cover. It is also a breeding ground for the wildebeest. There are gazelles, impalas, zebras, hartebeest, buffalo as well as waterbucks in the area. Hyrax and pythons are also found here.

The western corridor has black cotton kind of soil. The heart of the region is the Grumeti River that homes the Nile crocodiles, martial eagle as well as the Colubus monkey.

The northern Serengeti is the third region. The landscape consists of woodlands and hills. The Mara River also borders the region. It is a great place to view elephants, dik dik and giraffes.

The park has a lot of other animals including the big five. The big five mean lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and the African buffalo. The area is well protected as it is considered to be a world heritage site.
