Meaningful Topics I Learned in CISB11

1.       Milestones in Computer Evolutions: I found this topic very interesting because I want a career in  Computer Information Systems and I find it very important for us to understand where we are coming from to get an idea where we are headed. Just looking at the past computer generations we can clearly see that just in the past years the changes have been drastic. And that in very little years, technology keeps moving forward. You start thinking of everything that has been done and you really see no ends to this process and that is one of the reasons I find this such an interesting career because there is no limit, you can only limit yourself. This topic has showed me the limitless potential that I can have in a CIS career and with so many options to choose from, so many areas and careers available in CIS, it’s just a matter of identifying what it is that you like and go for it.

2.       The Difference between Storage Systems and Memory: This topic was very interesting to me because I thought I knew what storage systems were and that memory was just something you installed in the computer to make it faster and it turned out that I was completely wrong. Seeing the amount of different storage systems available gave me the ability to open my eyes and see the different types of memory and storage there really are, and also the different uses we can give them. Getting to understand a bit more how these functions work in a computer helps me see where and how I can use the memory and storage systems when I actually start working in the CIS industry.

3.       Understanding the difference between System Software and Application Software: Getting to understand the difference between these two types of software was actually pretty interesting to me because I really never thought about the System Software, never really gave it too much importance. I did get to see the difference between both and something is for sure, I know that I would much rather work on Application Software. I lean more towards this area because I have always wanted to know how to make a program handle a specific task. I know this is just the beginning of a long journey but I know it will be rewarding. Seeing this subject at this stage is perfect because it helped me identify what field of the CIS career I want to work in.

4.       Why Computer Users Should be Concerned about Network and Internet Security: This is a subject that to be completely honest I never really paid attention to because I thought “what can a hacker get from my computer that can be useful?”. And the truth is they could get a lot out of my computer! Personal information that can be used to hurt me financially without me even noticing it. And now that I know I want to work in the CIS industry, security will be a primary factor. You never know what a person could do with your information or even files. I am thinking in the Computer Database Systems, this a very critical and delicate subject. There is a lot of information a person with bad intentions could use a database for. Security is a primary factor when it comes to database and that is something I now understand, even though you can’t see somebody, doesn’t mean they are not there and that’s something we need to be able to avoid.
