The Legend of
Owl Rock
During the Great Depression, the
caretaker of Owl Island was a curious old man named Scarab. He
took great pride in maintaining all of the buildings and grounds on the
island and would always be the first to rise in the morning and the last
to go to bed. His living quarters consisted of a tiny room near
the pump house, and it got so cold out there that his home became known
as "Scarab's Igloo."
One frigid night in November, there was a fiddle band playing on the
porch of the main lodge. Guests in attendance that evening said
that what they saw was perhaps the "most peculiar thing ever to be
witnessed on God's Green Earth." As the musicians finished their last
song and the night grew still, everyone heard an odd sound coming from
the great rock that welcomed them to this island oasis. As
the stunned onlookers filed out of the cabin, they were amazed to see
Scarab sitting on Owl Rock, completely covered in hooting owls.
No one knows the significance of this incident or the events that led up
to it, but to this day Owl Rock continues to be a magnet for strange and
mystical experiences.
