Reverend Franklyn Beckles, Jr. opened his doors to the homeless Sunday. Beckles already runs a day care, ministry and learning center out of his Church and Karate School called the Children's Christian Center. Now he's decided a soup kitchen is the next best way to help the Augusta community, and teach martial arts for the kids. ?They have to have a need and a wanting to participate in a Christian atmosphere. We give them food talk to them and we give them a little bit of the word, we pray with them,? Beckles said. He'll also feed the homeless from his Church and new Karate Academy November 29th. Set in several cities across the United States, the series offers an insider's look at the real-life world of homicide investigators. While the cinema-verite series often follows the investigations to their end, it usually focuses on their first 48 hours, hence the title. The First 48 offers a realistic, uncompromising, gritty view of homicide detectives in America, and the methods they use to do their job effectively. The series is notable because it takes viewers behind the scenes of real-life investigations with unprecedented access to crime scenes, forensic processing, and interrogations, offering a realistic view of homicide detective work that is not found in fictionalized television shows. In 2006, the series was nominated for a Distinguished Documentary Achievement Award, in the Continuing Series category, by the International Documentary Association, eventually losing out to American Experience. Dion Graham is featured as the narrator, and is the only member of the cast to be in every one of the episodes.[1] On March 3, 2009, it was renewed for its 9th season by A&E, and currently has 152 episodes.[2] By season 6, The First 48 had become the highest rated non-fiction justice series on American television, and had gained considerable critical acclaim.[3] The season 8 premiere on January 1, 2009 garnered a domestic audience of 2.3 million viewers making it the series' most watched episode, thus far.[4] Each episode picks one or more homicides in different cities, covering each alternately, showing how detectives use forensic evidence, witness interviews and other advanced detective skills to identify suspects. After sending a flash grenade through the window of the first-floor room where Jones was sleeping, SWAT officers entered the front door. As 110 soldiers give their ceremonial salute, families hold back tears, take pictures and young ones wave the nation's colors in their honor. "We all understand that when we join the military, part of our responsibility could very well be to be called upon to go forward and support the constitution and that's exactly what we're doing," Lt. Col. Robert Edmonson said. Lt. Col. Edmonson is the Battalion Commander for the 63rd Expeditionary Signal Battalion who was deploying from Fort Gordon. Roll call inside of Gym #3 at Fort Gordon, officially sent this battalion off to Iraq to do communications work, but this time it's not for war. "I'm confident the soldiers are trained to be a part of the transitional from combat to more of a security and support type roll over in Iraq," Lt. Col. Edmonson said. But watching loved ones get on a bus and leave still isn't easy for families, said Brandi Smith whose husband Sgt. Ryan Smith has deployed overseas three times, two while they've been married. "It's going to be harder than the last time," Smith said. "But it's the separation and the distance that's getting us." Colen Ortiz, wife of 1st Sgt. Antony Ortiz cried watching her husband leave, which he has done three times before. "I'm happy that he's going to protect us, but I'm not very happy for at the timing," she said. That's because Ortiz and her husband are expecting in October. "The very first three, I just had to worry about myself but now I have someone else to worry about so that makes it a little tougher," Ortiz said. Smith held onto her husband tight and kissed him multiple times as she said bye. She is expecting to have their first child in a month. "She's going to be strong like her momma and she's going to be a fighter like her daddy," Smith said. "So it's going to be alright, we're going to make it." As the 63rd Expeditionary Signal Battalion buses pulled off, families waved goodbye, hoping they come back home safe and sound. "We hope that they complete their mission successfully and just get home safe however long it takes just hurry home," Smith said. "I love you baby."
