Coco’s Story

How Coco’s Creations came to be ……….

I promised my daughter she could get a dog when she was 10 years old.  In August 2007, when she was 8 1/2 years old, she convinced me she was ready to take care of a dog.  So, we set off to the Animal Rescue League in Boston, Massachusetts to drop off Gabriella’s “wish list”, information about the type of dog she wanted to adopt.  According to her “wish list”, she wanted a small white poodle-type dog.  From there we were on our way to Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston to leave Gabriella’s “wish list” with them as well.

While I was talking to the woman who was helping us at the Animal Rescue League, Gabriella began playing with a dog that was peeking out from behind the desk.  When I told Gabriella it was time to leave, she said, “Mom, I love this dog!”  She did not want to leave the dog behind.  I assumed the dog belonged to the woman at the desk, but the woman whispered to me that the dog was available for adoption.  The dog was a chocolate brown pit bull, a far cry from the white poodle that Gabriella said she wanted!

We went to Angell Memorial, and looked at some dogs there, but we could not stop thinking about “Coco”, the pit bull we saw at the Animal Rescue League.  The next day Gabriella and I took my husband to see Coco.  He played with her for an hour and a half, until they told us they were closing for the day.  We were all sure we wanted to bring Coco home with us, so we asked about adopting Coco.  We were thrilled when we learned we were approved for the adoption!

We did not know a lot about Coco just that she had been abandoned and she was estimated to be between three and four years old.  She had been waiting at the Animal Rescue League for a home for about six months and all of the employees and volunteers there had come to love her.  We knew she had some health issues; she needed hip surgery and needed to have several teeth pulled.  After her surgeries, we took Coco back to the veterinarian at the Rescue League every six weeks for check-ups.  It was during one of these visits that we learned Coco’s story had been featured on WBZnews

Because she had so many teeth pulled and had a poor diet for such a long time as a stray, Coco needed special food to get her coat, teeth and bones healthy.  I love to cook, so I perused some cookbooks and websites to find ingredients and recipes that would be healthy for Coco and would be easy for her to chew.  Coco loved the food and treats I made from healthy, organic ingredients.  I began giving samples to friends and neighbors who had dogs.  The feedback I received was encouraging, so I decided to launch a line of healthy and organic homemade products.

…………… And so began Coco’s Creations!
