The fiesta kicks off with a benediction and prayer to the patron saint and is full of danger, thrills and commotion – certainly not for the faint-hearted!
La Tomatina: is a fun fight with tomatoes, held in August in Bunol, Valencia. Nearly 40 tonnes of tomatoes are hurled during the fight, along with continuous streams of water from fire hoses used to wash down the streets. People are expected to follow certain rules laid down by the city council. The festival has become world-famous and attracts thousands of tourists.
Carnival: in Spain is the best-known festival. Held during the season before Lent (early February), this is an exuberant celebration all over Spain, with parades, masks, dances, music, acrobatics and floats. The biggest carnivals are in Santa Cruz, Stiges and Las Palmas. The carnival is also celebrated in Cadiz and the Canary Islands with their own special regional flavors.
