First Grade 2013-2014
ANNOUNCEMENTS - Finally in First Grade!!!! We are off to a great start! Our class is already bonding with each other. We look forward to the months ahead. Back to School Night is Wednesday, August 28th from 7:00 to 7:45 in room 9. No school on Monday, September 2nd for Labor Day.
SCIENCE - Our district adopted science program includes the study of solids and liquids, weather, and plants and animals. We will also study the rainforest as well as various insects. All of our science units are hands-on.
MATH - Our first grade math books are from Houghton Mifflin. We will also use math games and other hands-on lessons to teach math concepts. Students will study the following math concepts this school year: number sense, algebra and function, reasoning, measurement, time, geometry, data and probability.
WRITING - The students will be writing, illustrating, and publishing their own books. Additionally, the students will write the weekend news each Monday as well their own monthly newsletter.
READING - This school year, the children will enjoy reading poetry as well as books read aloud. The students will have silent reading time each day after lunch. Guided reading of leveled books will take place during the week. During guided reading, students read independently or in groups with readers with similar reading ability.
