There is an ancient 1729 parochial church at the plaza center in honor of the local saint, Apostle Santiago. The plaza also houses the town hall and old casino.

Modernization

Albatera continued to flourish naturally with palm trees along its streets amidst whitewashed houses which are typical of Mediterranean homes. There is plenty of beauty nature around Albatera.

Albatera has plenty of plains, wetlands, mountains and parks. The village’s park is called Park of Orchards; it spans 30,000 square meters and houses beautiful trees and plants in the midst a lake and a fountain. There are plenty of designated walking routes in and around Albatera.

Albatera has developed a modern resort for golf and sports such as shooting, tennis and riding.

Intriguing Ronda Sights

Ronda is place that has many intriguing sights to behold. Tourists would love to walk through this quaint town to check out the old and delightful pieces that stretch back in time to unveil the rich and exquisite culture of the past epochs with their impressive architectural skills and knowledge.

Ciudad quarter

The Ciudad quarter is an old section of Ronda with many quaint offerings. One of the highlights here is the impressive Alcázar fortress built by the Moors in the 13th century before the French came and plundered the place in 1809. The once virtually impregnable fortress was destroyed a few years before the fall of Granada when different conquerors came onto the scene.

Also found in the Ciudad quarter is some excellent and well preserved town gates set up by the Moors and the Re-Conquest. Ronda also has a couple of old and new bridges that are quaint structures. In order to maintain it, the ancient Puente Nuevo Bridge is closed today to the public. Its bar used to the town prison during the Civil War; the gorge near the bridge is where prisoners during the vicious massacres in Ronda were thrown into as recorded in Hemingway’s book “For Whom the Bell Tolls”.

Mercadillo quarter

This site was set up by the Christian Re-conquest with less interesting structures compared to those found in Ciudad. There is a well preserved inn which Miguel Cervantes stayed; there is also the 16th century Posada de las Ánimas which is the oldest building in Mercadillo quarter. It is also called Hogar del Pensionista located on Calle Cecilia. Other old structures include 18th century Plaza de Toros, Plaza de España and the ancient paseo that is situated on an intriguing cliff top that offers panoramic views of Ronda’s bridges.

Development

Ronda is well involved in modern development while preserving the old especially in traditions that are stemmed from the past colorful cultures such as bullfighting. Ronda boasts to be the origin of modern corrida or bullfighting. Its 1781 bullring is purported the oldest in Spain that attracts many during the annual bullfighting season.

September is an exciting time in tossa de mar Ronda where fiestas are held; there is the celebration of corrida goyesca in honor of Goya, Spain’s renowned artist who painted many delightful bullfights at Ronda. This fiesta is celebrated in grand style with participants donned in 18th century costumes.

The bullring is open to the public during its off peak season as there is a museum which houses many interesting pictures and information about bullfighting.

Bull Running Intrigue at Pamplona

Bull running at Pamplona is one of the most exciting events that happen every July during the week long San Fermin festival. On the first day of the festival, there would be the official opening ceremony to kick start the celebration.

San Fermin festival

Although this is supposedly a religious festival that is held in honor of a local saint, lloret Saint Fermin, bull running and bull fights are part and parcel of the traditions that take place every year during the fiesta. The opening ceremony on the first day or more commonly known as Chupinazo sees the city hall premise crowded with people in full fiesta mood as that in a rock concert. There would be jubilant celebration with champagne water fight and World Cup football matches. Everyone is in a jovial and celebrative mood.

Bull runs

On the second day of the festival, at 8am sharp, the deafening silence is broken with the rocket sound fired to the delight of the waiting crowds. Dozens of 12-ton bulls are released to run through the city’s narrow medieval streets in cordoned and protective routes. As many as 3500 runners can sign up at this event daily.

The encierros or daily bull runs are a steep tradition where herdsmen had to drive their bulls through the city streets to get into the town bullring. This tradition has been in existing for decades with townspeople today helping to drive the bulls until it evolved to participants running in front of the bulls.

Although bull running is a dangerous activity, it is also an exhilarating experience for those who are adventurous and want something challenging. There is some risk and danger involved although protective measures are undertaken. There are 2 sets of protective barricades along the designated route with police, ambulances and paramedics at their stations to assist the injured.

Bull running participants would be given a few minutes head start before the bulls are released. There is high tension and fear in the atmosphere as runners wait in excitement for the bell tower to strike. Mayhem follows as the bulls are released with cheers, yells and screams reaching the highest decibel.

Outcome

The runners put their best foot forward to stay ahead of the raging bulls which weight as much as 1200 pounds. The huge creatures can be very intimidating even with their heads and horns lowered. Runners need to stay alert to the bulls’ presence and try their best to avoid them by moving to the sides instinctively or run faster than the creatures.

The runners have only a few minutes to determine their safety and survival; if they succeed, they would have imprinted one of the lasting memories in their lifetime.

The Gibralfaro Castle Spain

Spain has interesting features to see which could be the reason as to why it has remained to be a very popular holiday destination of the world. The most striking thing about this castle is that it is situated on a hill top. The Muslims put this tower here with the belief that it was where the Phoenician lighthouse once stood. They therefore called the hill Lighthouse Hill which is Yabal-Faruk in Muslim. This is how it got the name that it has currently. The castle took half a century to build and that was back in 14th century. It was the work of Yusuf I the then caliph of Granada. The castle was then to be taken over by Catholic Kings and was being used as a holding ground for the defeated.

The French army then destroyed the castle leaving it abandoned back in 1812. It has remained ruined to date but you will find a great transformation on one side of the castle which was changed into Parador de Gibralfaro. The castle is open to the public on most of the days from morning till 6 o’clock in winter and up to 8pm in summer. The views from the castle are impressive most especially because it is on hill top thus giving you an amazing panorama.

Castles make part of the numerous monuments scattered in all of Spain. While some are still in very good shape, some are ruined but have the value for the regions that they are located in.
