5 Things worth Knowing about Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico as a place discovered by Christopher Columbus may already be something you know. But, what about the fact that it has its own Galapagos? Or, that there are both black and white Puerto Ricans? Or, that it was where the first ever gunshot was fired? You may be unaware of it but there’s a lot more about the Caribbean nation you still have yet to find out.

Here’s a list put together by the Puerto Rico Blogger of 5 things worth knowing about Puerto Rico:

  1. A tiny tree frog is the country’s mascot.

As its high-pitched sound, co-kee, can always be heard in many parts of the country, Coqui was nominated to be the mascot. What makes the cute inch-sized amphibian extraordinary? It can’t be found elsewhere in the world.

  1. It’s the place where the rums are from.

Once you’re told that 80% of rum distributed in all regions of the Americas are from the country, you’d probably scratch your head. But, the statement’s true. From aged wines and random cocktails to the branded kinds including Bacardi and Don Q, the Puerto Ricans can give them to you.

  1. All across the country, gambling is legal.

When in the northeastern U.S. territory, you may gamble away. Why? It’s the reason tourists choose to go on a vacation to the place. There is no law against the activity.

  1. Locals have adopted a unique version of Spanish.

Puerto Ricans or Boricuas, as they’re often referred to, were the folks who developed Spanglish. As majority of them are bilingual (Spanish-speaking and English-speaking), incorporating two languages seems easier.

  1. It is the home of poets.

La Isla del Enchant is among Puerto Ricans’ name for their beloved nation. With famous poets Clemento Soto Velez, Jose Colon, Nemesio Canales, and Zenobia Camprubi as residents who got inspiration from the place, it’s an enchanting island indeed.
