Indian Railways Station Codes Uniquely Identify Each Railway Station

Railways were first introduced in India in 1853, and from that modest beginning it has grown up to be the largest rail net work in Asia with 114,500km of track route and about 7500 railway stations. For the people of India it is not only a means of transport, but also a glimpse in to the past of India. A few of the trains are as old as 100 years old, but they are painted and well maintained. Some of the classic trains are still in service, while others have faded away in the memory lane. The railways connect almost all parts of the country. All major cities, towns and villages have a railway station with their own Indian Railways Station Codes.

Knowing the station code is very useful when you book a ticket. There is an option called code finder on the website of the Indian Railways. Here, you will be asked to enter the zone, division and name of station, and you will get the code of whichever station you want. Once you know the code of a station, you will be able to get a list of all stations passing through the station, having stoppage there, and all other details.

The code of each station is also available in the train time table, or at any railway station. Generally, all station codes use just 3 letters. In some cases, even 4 letters are used. While booking a ticket, it will be easier to give in the Indian Railways Station Codes of the stations.
