I originated from the rattan plant which is mostly grown in the wild. My popularity was passed from Egypt to Rome and throughout Europe by international sea traders.
In view of the existing and projected supply-demand gap for timber inputs into the wood-based industry, most people developed interest in the rattan tree plantation over the years. The long gestation period of timber trees shifted several investors into the rattan industry which is the source of my raw material. They explored the possibility of using alternative wood to supplement re-afforestation initiatives. They realized how pliable, versatile, affordable and durable my products are. I can be twisted and woven into different shapes and designs.

I am a great source of employment to both urban and rural dwellers as well as to males and females of all generations. This is an income generating activity that helps to alleviate poverty in the country side, not withstanding the acquisition of skills, creativity and innovative nature, which make most people independent and famous.
