Being a Respiratory Therapist is a very rewarding job. You will help people whom are having breathing problems but this also means being involved with a little bodily fluid another option to further your education is to seek out a specialty after you’ve graduated and have worked in the field for a little bit. You can seek a job at a pediatrician’s office or at a children’s hospital but until you find an opportunity like that available to you keep in mind that you will most likely be starting at a normal hospital for employment.

This job will require you work in a hospital based setting and it may also require you work nights. If you are a single parent or if your husband also works nights this may not be the profession for you. It may also require very long hours like four ten hour days instead of five eight hour days. Depending if you are married and if you have a husband who supports your endeavors this may or may not work. Some people actually prefer longer work days and more weekend time.

The middle range for this salary is $53,000 a year. A young single mother can live off of 22,000 per year but would only be able to rent an apartment and wouldn’t be able to afford a car payment so this would be a drastic increase to income so much that you would be able to afford a mortgage on something reasonable and a reasonable car payment as well. Of course salaries also may vary on which city you live in. For instance, professionals in Orlando usually make more than professionals in Gainesville because it’s bigger and more job are available there. Another thing to keep in mind is that you will most likely be paying off your school loan which could also be the equivalent to a car payment.

I spoke to someone recently that had just finished up the Respiratory Therapy program last year in Jacksonville, Florida. She informed me that her place of employment were actually waiting on the next set of graduates because they had jobs to fill, so I think right at the moment jobs for Respiratory Therapists are in very high demand. Of course like any other job position you will need to be presentable and follow basic interview protocol because no job is guaranteed just because you graduated from the program.

If you look online or in the paper there are numerous hospitals looking for a Respiratory Therapist so I don’t think that finding a job as long as you show confidence and have a well groomed appearance. Most programs before your accepted prefer you to have working experience somewhere before you get accepted. Once your finished with the program you will have the set of skills you need to help start treating patients and then you will be on your way with your career. For only two years of school not including prerequisites this job is a great way to make a nice living without earning a Bachelors or Masters Degree.
