Drafting Brandon Weeden In The Late Round

The Cleveland Browns recently announced that rookie Brandon Weeden will be the starting quarterback for them going into the season. While some thought this was going to be the case all along, this confirmation means that people should start considering him in their fantasy football league as a late round draft pick. He does not have a ton of hype or expectations around him, but he is a player who could surprise some people with this opportunity.

Just the fact that he gets to start is reason enough to consider him in your draft. Sure, the Browns are not expected to do much in 2012, but he can still have a decent season. In fact, the Browns not being good could help him score points in your fantasy football league. When a team is trying to come back in a game, they throw more. That means more opportunities for him to pick up fantasy football points for a player. After all, it does not matter if he wins, just as long as he scores points.

Another reason to take Weeden is a little bit about the unknown. He has talent, and while many expect him to only be so-so in 2012, he could just explode and end up being much better. Taking him with one of the final picks in the draft is safe, since you are risking next to nothing. He will be available as late as the 15th round in most leagues, unless of course you have a Browns fan in your league who is much higher on him than the rest of the world.

Weeden will get a chance to run a West Coast offenses that will in turn help him put up decent numbers as rookie. If he can form a partnership with running back Trent Richardson in the air as well, that is just an added bonus. Weeden has a strong, accurate arm and he is much older than a typical rookie. He has also played professional sports before, so he knows how to handle this type of pressure.

When trying to find a backup quarterback in your fantasy football league, Brandon Weeden is not a bad option at all to consider. He has the chance to be average in year one, and that is really all you are looking for when drafting a backup to try to help you win in your own fantasy football league.
