Valencia a City of Spain

Valencia is a large city of Spain situated at the central part of the coastline of the Mediterranean sea of the country. With its population of more than 809 thousand people it is one of the most populous both in the country of Spain and in the whole Europe. It is very popular for tourists and what makes it even more well-known is that the coast line of the city is very close to the Balearic Islands of Spain. It is very easy to travel to the islands right from the city of Valencia. It is one of the three most visited cities in the country - of which the two others are Barcelona and Madrid – and it is also equidistant from both of them (which is about 350 kilometers). What this city is also unique with is that there are two languages in the city – Valencia and Spanish.

The city was named Valentia by the Romans in about the 2nd century BC, when it was established, and the name can be translated from Latin as “strong”, “brave” or “heroic”.

If you want to discover the city, you should start with the old city. Until the middle of 19th century there was a medieval stone wall surrounding the city of Valencia to protect it from the outside. Some remains of that time you can still see in the Institute of Modern Arts, which is just one of many museums you can find in the city.

Here you can see countless evidences of the past that the city has gone through, the most especially those of the architecture. People usually see the ancient architecture of ferienwohnungen spanien in the most abundant city of Spain with the numerous palaces and churches of it. Here you will find a surprising diversity of architecture styles. What you shouldn’t miss once you visit the wonderful city is Palau de la Musica, (or The Music Palace) which isn’t the oldest building in Valencia but it is very impressive and it gives you an impression of the contemporary architecture of the city.

The weather of Valencia is not the hottest in Spain. Summers are just perfect for sun loungers, while winters are usually a little milder. In average the temperature is about 30º C in summer and during the winters it can be about 15º C. Autumns and springs are probably the most appropriate and pleasant time for long walks and discovering the fascinating old town.

The Theatres of Barcelona

Of course, Barcelona’s theatres are not as famous as those of Madrid, but they are really considerable. The theatres in Barcelona are active and lively enough and here you can see some great plays of both local and foreign authors.

Here are some of the most interesting and popular of them:

Gran Teatre del Liceu

This amazing theatre is located on Barcelona’s central promenade of Las Ramblas. The theatre was built and established in 1847 from personal funds. It had a very wide program that contained anything you could expect from a theatre in that time. However in 1861, there was a fire in the Gran Teatre del Liceu and almost all of it incurred damage. Both the local government and the inhabitants of the city wanted it to be rebuilt as soon as possible, but unfortunately in 1996 it was once again set on fire, so the new theatre was restored and reopened only in 1999. Today in the Gran Teatre del Liceu the greatest works of the most amazing classical composers such as Verdi, Mozart and Strauss are sung by the best singers of our time. Many singers who are today world famous with their incredible voices once started their work in the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

Palau de la Musica Catalana

Palau de la Musica is a concert hall designed by the famous architect Domenech i Montaner in 1908. It is located in the old town of Barcelona, in the area that is usually called the Gothic quarter. Today it is most famous for its architecture. It is part of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites and presumably it is one of the best patterns of modernism architecture in the whole world. However it is also the place for the best concerts and cultural events in Barcelona, so there are two great reasons to visit this magical building.

Other Notable Theatres in Barcelona:

1. Theatres of Lliure, Tivoli and Poliorama. These places have recently become very popular. If you are looking for a good play, you just need to choose one of these places.

2. El Mercat de les Flors which has become a cultural centre in Barcelona and is located in the beautiful old Eixample district and the National Theatre of Catalonia on the Square of Arts. These are places where you will find the widest program of cultural events. Drama, concerts, music, dances and others. These really are the places you should visit if you are looking for some good cultural relaxation because you will certainly find something for your taste and it does not necessarily have to be a classical performance.

Madrid, the Spanish capital, is a city that attracts the attention of millions of tourists from all the corners of the world. It does it thanks to the perfect balance between the old (represented by the remnants that remind of the past cultures that ruled it at one time or another in the past) and the new, the modern, the cosmopolite. You should prepare with a lot of energy in Madrid, because you will surely need it; there are hundreds of places that are worth being visited and hundreds of things to do, so consider more than just a weekend in Madrid! If you want to reach its essence and to understand its atmosphere, make sure you do all the things the inhabitants do and the experience will be a memorable one!

Having fun in Madrid

Madrid is the type of city that will enter your body and run through your veins, as it has a long list of entertainment possibilities that match any type of tourist, regardless of his or her interests and preferences. Even the dullest man, who is satisfied with just a DVD or a good book, will find something entertaining in Madrid. This makes the city a very popular one, a place where millions of people from all around the world come to have fun, relax and enjoy the beauties of life! While you are in Madrid, there is one thing that you have to know: it is far from uncommon to see the streets packed with people on a Sunday night, more that you regularly see in another European city on a Friday or a Saturday.

People love to enjoy the romantic air of a promenade by the imposing Royal Palace, as the couples can enjoy the lights that seem to appear from everywhere right after dark. The inhabitants and the visitors also love the tapas bars, where they can enjoy the company of their friends, a delicious tapas and a refreshing cerveza (the Spanish beer). If you prefer another type of entertainment, you can choose the famous Gran Via, the place where all the modern live theatres and the movie halls attract the attention with the latest releases. If you prefer a typical Spanish night, choose a flamenco restaurant, as it both serves delicious local food (so you can taste the Spanish cuisine) and offers flamenco shows, always full of color, passion and good music! Have fun!

Granada and The Alhambra

Attractions in Granada

Granada is one of the most visited cities in Spain thanks to its amazing Moorish legacy. The beauty of the Moorish architecture in Granada is absolutely breathtaking, so you should consider the city as destination for one of your future holidays. Besides the fact that the Moorish architecture in the city is unique, you also have the chance to admire the famous Alhambra, the Moorish palace and fortress that became popular worldwide.

Visiting the Alhambra

Once you finish the sightseeing tour of Granada, make sure you have at least one day at your disposal in order to visit the Alhambra. The Alhambra guards and dominates at the same time the entire city from the top of its hill, surrounded by spectacular views that seem to be taken from a fairytale. Climbing up the hill needs a lot of energy and it can be tiring, but it is definitely worth the effort. The wooded path that crosses through the lush park is just the beginning of the wonders that you are about to see and a hint of what is waiting for you up on the plateau. Once inside the Alhambra, make sure you visit all its palaces and gardens, as each and every single one of them is unique!

The Nasrid Palace is the first stop on your list, as you only have half an hour allocated on your ticket for it. Describing the palace in words is almost impossible; you have to see it to believe it. The beauty and the symmetry are emphasized and all the rooms have specific patterns, while the courtyards are spectacular green oasis where tourists can relax and enjoy the sound of the pools. Charles V ordered the construction for a palace inside the Alhambra; the construction for this palace started decades after the Christian conquest, so you’ll notice a difference in styles. It is a special design using the circle within a square concept and even if you are not an architecture connoisseur, you can still notice the fact that Charles V had a very special taste for the beautiful. The Alhambra has other monuments that attract the attention of tourists besides the palaces: towers, ramparts, the Alcazaba and the fantastic Generalife, with its summer palace and gardens.  You’ll admire the colored flower beds and the perfume that comes from the blossomed orange trees. I assure you that the experience is unique! Enjoy!

A Sightseeing Holiday In Madrid

The spectacular city

Madrid is the capital of Spain and one of its most amazing cities. It is an incredible destination for all those who dream about a sightseeing holiday, so take it into consideration as it really deserves your entire attention. The sightseeing tour of Madrid begins and ends for most of those who visit the city with its center. The area has fantastic world renowned monuments, such as the Royal Palace, the beautiful Plaza de Espana, the spectacular Plaza de Toros and the picturesque Parque Del Retiro. However, the official center of the city is considered the old Puerta Del Sol, which is also considered the center of the country, as it is the point from which distances in Spain are being measured.

Continuing the tour

After you visit the imposing Puerta del Sol, move towards southwest for just a couple of blocks, as you will find the Plaza Mayor. Plaza Mayor is a stone paved square, a pedestrian one that manages to impress the visitors with the arcaded passages that decorate all its sides. Its history is a much tormented one, as the construction started in 1590 and finished in 1619; the square only existed for a few decades, until it was completely destroyed by a fire. It was rebuilt the way you see it today in 1790.

The City Hall is another major point of interest for tourists, as they can even visit the interior of the buildings. For example, you can admire the beautiful Council Chambers, the place where all the important decisions regarding Madrid are being made. If you are a religious person, you are not allowed to miss the Almudena Cathedral, which was built between 1879 and 1993. The Cathedral shares a charming courtyard with the Royal Palace, which was actually built on the ruins of the old Moorish alcazar. The Prado Museum is one of the world’s most renowned museums thanks to the impressive art collections it hosts, so also make sure you have enough time to visit it; then, relax and enjoy the beauties of nature on the long alleys of the Royal Botanical Gardens. I assure you that the botanical show you will witness there is unique! Madrid is a city that demands a lot of energy from its tourists; if you want to understand its essence by visiting its monuments and buildings, choose a guided tour because it is surely going to include all the important sights! Enjoy!

It is one of the largest cities in Spain both by its size and by its population and the city is usually seen as the capital city of culture in Spain. There are more than 700 thousand people. The Region of Al Andalus

The region of Andalucía, located across the southern part of Spain, boasts a fabulous amount of history, culture and of course stunning scenery. Known for its picturesque villages, tasty local dishes and wonderful Islamic architecture, it is a favoured tourist destination amongst Europeans.

Each region in Andalucía is united by shared customs and traditions, and a common history as the last area of Arab occupation in Spain; however there exist charming local variations.  One of the most famous sights in the whole region is the wonderful Al Hambra palace in the southern city of Granada, which boasts a number of other Islamic era buildings and items of interest.

The area, like most of the rest of Spain, was under Islamic occupation by Moorish tribes for 8 centuries. Moorish legacy has left well organised towns and cities, and they developed an extensive city plan in most areas. Each place in the region boasts a number of sites and architecture dating back to this period, and many local churches have been discovered to have been built on the site of old mosques from the Islamic era.

The hilly landscape hides numerous picturesque villages and towns where life has remained largely at the same pace for centuries. Here you can find traditional local cafes and restaurants and a slow pace of life under the hot southern sun. The same hills and mountains of the Sierra Nevada amongst others enable the region to keep tourism alive during the winter months with fantastic possibilities for ski and snowboarding. The long coastline also offers great locations for water sports.

Despite the many quieter, more traditional areas away from the coast, there are also a number of very commercial and well served holiday resorts with a wide choice of apartments or villas for rent. These areas are great if you want an easy holiday with everything on your doorstep – head to Torremolinos for example. Those seeking the high life with expensive restaurants and luxury accommodation can head for Marbella.

The area boasts a unique atmosphere with a range of festivals throughout the year. It’s also the place to be if you want to either try your hand at the traditional flamenco dance famous to the region, or eat in a restaurant with local music and entertainment. Thanks to the history of the area there is also a wide range of museums and galleries proudly displaying items from Andalucía’s Islamic past, some of which also include earlier Roman remains. You should also head to the stunning old Cordoba mosque, which is one of the most impressive in the world.

Asturias in The North of Spain

The area of Asturias in the north of Spain played an important part in the evolution of modern day Spain as we know it. During the Arab occupation of Spain, which lasted a long 800 years, the area managed to remain Christian and was the point from which the resistance against the Moorish occupation was begun and maintained.

One of the most important cities is Oviedo. As the capital, it has a wide range of interesting buildings and architecture to view that reflects the areas history. The stunning Gothic cathedral is worth a visit, as are the many smaller religious buildings in the area. The well known coastal city of Gijon is also a nice place to see. Despite increasing industrialisation, the harbour areas still retain their charm.

The surrounding inland areas boast stunning natural scenery, picturesque villages and calming estuaries. On your way to Llanes you will be able to view the inland views as well as the waves of the coast from the main road. There are a number of lovely fishing villages in the area where you can get a delicious seafood meal for a great price. Increased tourist activity on the area has ensured that the local municipality has invested a considerable sum in upgrading and developing the facilities in the larger areas, and this includes the stunning beaches. The town of Llanes also boasts a charming old area with period properties and features, including the Santa Maria church.

If you’re interested in ancient times and the early inhabitants of this region you should head to Ribadesella which, like many other towns, has clean sand, an extensive commercial area in the town and some very interesting history. You should also visit some of the local estuaries when you are in the area – the Villaviciosan one is particularly charming with fruit trees.

No trip to the region would be complete without a stop in Gijon. It has a large commercial presence in the area but also some local, older and more charming features, including the harbour area. It’s also a popular tourist destination during the warmer months. The old town area is particularly picturesque, so it is worth a few hours exploring before heading down to the clean San Lorenzo sands for a dip in the sea. The old town boasts the brilliant Revillagigedo Palace.

There’s much more to see in the region, and it should be explored by car over a few weeks if possible. The mixture of old charm and tradition with modern commercialism ensure there is something for everyone in Asturias, and its less crowded than some of the big resorts on the south and east coasts of Spain.
