ADVICE FOR HTMs (HURTING "THINKING" MORMONS)

A "hurting/thinking Mormon" (HTM) is a Mormon who was a TBM (true-believing Mormon) but now has discovered things in Church history that lead them to seriously doubt the divine-origin of the Church. Hurting/thinking Mormons (HTMs) feel "shattered" and confused, and sometimes suicidal. They feel they'd had their testimonies "ripped out" from under them. They are confused, angry, bitter, resentful, and depressed. We'd like to say: "We have been there, done that!" We know how you feel! It hurts, and hurts bad! But, don't worry, you'll eventually feel better. All of us must go through the following stages of denial, confusion, depression, anger, and then finally, acceptance. Once we get to acceptance, we are no longer "hurting". Don't worry, the pain will eventually go away, but no faster than you want it to. Once you "accept" that the Church is a man-made institution, and that this knowledge is "okay" and that there are many other churches and religions out there to choose from, and you can still lead a happy and productive life outside of the Church, then your confusion and bitterness and anger will end. What is helpful is to find others like yourself for emotional and moral support. Please try to attend the monthly EMU Meetings in Salt Lake City, or host your own EMU meeting in your area, or attend the yearly Ex-Mormon Conference in Utah, or attend a local Post-Mormon chapter. You'll feel better! Hang in there! You are not alone!
