A visit to Costa Cálida

For most people, a holiday is for relaxing, for getting away from it all, from the stress of the office or from smog-filled streets. Lying on a towel on the beach, taking deep breaths of clean, sea air or just looking at the people who are doing the same is a good way of relaxing. Another way of relaxing is just walking among wonderful scenery, among green vegetation with a backdrop of a tall mountain in the distance. The beaches of Spain's Mediterranean have all of these possibilities where you can experience these varieties of relaxation. Costa Cálida is one such place.

The Warm Coast
As its name indicates, it is a part of the warm and sunny Mediterranean coast. Located next to the province of Murcia, it is a long expanse of sandy beach, beautifully maintained and spotless. In the distance you can see the nearby mountain that looks down onto the beach and out to sea. If you prefer to just sit back and look at the beautiful scenery of white sandy beach, blue Mediterranean and even bluer skies while feeling the cool sea breezes that refresh and invigorate, then you should take a walk on the nearby mountain.

Local Produce
The inhabitants of Costa Cálida grow vegetables, fruits and other produce in the fertile mountain soil. The nearby sea has valuable stocks of fish that local fishermen catch and sell to the restaurants that cater to the many tourists. They are drawn to Costa Cálida by the great combination of beaches, sea and mountains and also by the seafood that is always fresh in the local restaurants.

The Museum
One place that you should not miss is the local museum. It has many artifacts from Roman and pre-Roman times that have been carefully preserved and put on display. The highlight is the almost complete Roman Theater that has been painstakingly restored. Some of the props used in the theater, items of decoration for the theater itself and even a part of the stage where the performers tried to win applause from the Roman audience can be admired by modern tourists.

Costa Cálida is not as famous as the other resorts that dot the Mediterranean coast but it has its charm, as the yearly influx of tourists indicates. They are drawn by the quiet beauty of the place, by the winning combination of sea and mountain and also by the possibility of having a real vacation in an unforgettable place.

Visiting the Basque Country

San Sebastian is the jewel in Spain's Basque Country. Known as Donostia in Basque, it is situated above the scenic La Concha bay. It has a two-mile-long promenade of white sand beaches that just invites you to lie down and work on your tan.

The Old Town
The Old Town is where one can get a glimpse of the history of San Sebastian. Its main square or Plaza de la Constitución is now filled with café tables instead of the bulls and bullfighters that used to occupy this former bull ring. You can make a tour of the little shops around the square, taste the delicious pastries that are the specialty in some bakeries and buy souvenirs that proclaim Basque independence.  You can also visit the Baroque and Gothic churches that are a part of this old town of San Sebastian.

Aquariums
You can also visit the Aquarium where you can look at rays and sharks as they swim lazily around. It also features a show of fishing techniques used by Basque fishermen throughout the ages. The Naval Museum also has many interesting exhibits that show the intimate connection between the Basques and the sea.

Bilbao
Bilbao is the capital of the Basque Country. Under Franco it was a grimy, depressed city but recently it has become a vibrant Basque city that has assumed its role. It now has an opera house, a convention center and its pride and joy - the Guggenheim Museum, an architectural marvel that proclaims the new Bilbao.

A Visit to the Guggenheim
The first stop for any tourist is almost always a visit to the Guggenheim. Its stunning design and construction can hold your attention for hours as you contemplate its limestone and titanium structure. Inside, you can choose which of the twenty galleries you will visit. You can even learn beforehand about a particular artist from the teaching aids on the ground floor.

Lekeitio
Lekeitio is a small fishing village where you can stay while you explore the coast and the hill villages. It does not have much to offer by way of sightseeing except for a good example of a Basque Gothic church.

A Visit to Guernica
From Lekeitio you can visit the nearby town of Guernica made famous by Picasso's painting of the same name. It is the site of the oak tree of Guernica, a symbol of Basque nationalism throughout the ages.
